While building and researching my previous work, Depth Array, which focused on the visual experience of depth, I made several discoveries that led to interesting visual experiences. These discoveries form the basis for the Elevation installation. The work, titled 'Elevation,' is named after the visual effect that occurs and describes the operation of the installation. The installation focuses on our spatial experience: how we perceive a space and the effect changes in that space have on our experience. The work consists of pillars that, through an internal optical element, send light across the space as a plane. Each pillar can be controlled individually and can move light planes through the space at its own pace, up and down. These light planes act as a temporary new ceiling of the respective space. This allows us to play with the vertical depth perception of the visitor. Additionally, the operation of the system creates a light play around the pillars on the walls, which is very interesting in itself. By adjusting the values of speed, light position, and timing, we can target the afterimage of the visitor and thus create a unique experience.
